As we say goodbye to beach days and transition to sweater weather, now is the perfect time to experience the beautiful fall colors New England is known for. Whether you take the commuter rail to nearby Concord, Massachusetts, or make a weekend trip to Stowe, Vermont, you’re sure to find exquisite fall foliage everywhere you look. If a day trip is more your speed, look no further than Concord, MA. Just a short train ride from Ora, Concord offers a number of walking trails and nature preserves perfect for experiencing the remaining colors of fall. While you’re there, walk among the trees to Author’s Ridge at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery to see where literary greats like Ralph Waldo Emerson are laid to rest.
Slightly further afield, Newport, RI, offers a scenic 10-mile drive along the waterfront that includes eye-catching views of both Rhode Island’s fall colors and the harbor. While you’re there, make a stop at the Newport Mansions to experience their extensive grounds.
If you’re looking for a unique fall experience, head up to Bretton Woods, NH, for a scenic ride in a coal-fired steam locomotive. Nestled among the White Mountains on Mt. Washington is the Cog Railway, recently ranked one of the best fall foliage train rides by Country Living Magazine. Enjoy the beauty of fall from above the treeline, as the train takes you to the summit of the Northeast’s highest mountain peak.
Known as “fall’s color capital,” Stowe, VT, is the perfect place for a weekend getaway! Spend the day exploring one of the area’s popular hiking spots, or soak in the mountain air as you enjoy a scenic drive through the countryside.
